Who's involved
- Creative Intelligence for the Creative Economy programming is intended for high school students grades 9 to 12, but the initiative is community-wide. It will benefit all participants and the wider community.
- The program is being developed by a grassroots collection of artists, educators and arts organizations, and has received funding from Ontario’s Ministry of Culture under its Cultural Strategic Investment Fund. The Arts Council of Muskoka is spearheading this program in partnership with the Huntsville Festival of the Arts, and the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival. More than a dozen individuals in the arts, youth and business sectors have contributed to the program’s formation.
- The program is heavily reliant on partnerships with the arts, corporate and educational communities, including the school boards, businesses, professional artists and others in the burgeoning creative economy.
The Mission
To expose Muskoka Secondary School students to creative career opportunities, engage them in the creative process, and increase preparedness for integration into Muskoka's Creative Economy
What is the Creative Economy
Powering the great ongoing changes of our time is the rise of human creativity as the defining feature of economic life. Creativity has come to be valued - and systems have evolved to encourage and harness it - because new technologies, new industries, new wealth and all other good economic things flow from it.
- Excerpt from Richard Florida's - Rise of the Creative Class ...and how it's transforming work, leisure, community & everyday life
The Method
- A kick off forum meeting engaging students, educators, businesses, creative professionals, economic development, and community groups in a roundtable discussion of issues surrounding Muskoka's transition into the creative economy
- A series of Arts Mentoring, Creativity Workshops, Arts & Creativity-related projects for Secondary School Classes scheduled forJan/Feb through May/June 2010.
- The programming does not take place during school time, nor does it affect the school curriculum. It is a supplementary opportunity for students to hone their skills for the burgeoning creative economy. It makes use of but is not limited to the students’ requirement to fulfil 40 hours of volunteer service over the course of their high school years.
